The Land of Milk and Honey

Picture Postcards by Oskar Herrfurth
There are many different versions of The Land of Milk and Honey, also known as Cockaigne in English- and Schlauraffen Land in German-speaking countries. Most of them are almost without a plot, leaning on observations of nonsense characteristics in a utopic world where nobody has to work and everything is in abundance.

One version is also published in the collection by Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm (it's short and completely without a sense), but Oskar Herrfurth used different scenes for this series of six postcards published by Uvachrome.

Everybody is happy in the Schlauraffen Land. Instead of water, wine is coming out of pipes, and there's plenty of it. It's completely free of charge, of course, and you can drink it as much as you want. You can even lie under a barrel with an open pipe, so a stream flows directly into your mouth to spare even the slightest effort at leaning or otherwise moving toward the source of your drinking pleasure.

If you drink too much, no need to worry. Just sleep it over because the weather is always just perfect, and nobody will hurt you. When you wake up, just continue!

Don't be surprised to have a lot of merry companions as well!

Food is another source of joy. As the name clearly states, it's impossible to suffer from hunger in the Land of Milk and Honey. Ham, sausages, and other meat delicacies grow on trees, and you can just take them or lie under the branch with a tasty bite, and wait for it to fall down. Tasty pigs, all perfectly roasted, are wandering around waiting to be eaten with knives and forks already stabbed into their juicy backs, ready for action.

If you prefer fish, you are in a good place as well. Brooks are full of fish and crayfish which are not just cooked but also willing to leave the water and jump right into your hands. There are bushes with bread and trees with hot cakes to satisfy you completely without charge.

Life is not just eating and drinking. You need to look good as well and what makes you feel better than a nice dress? Well, several nice dresses can do even better.

Several types of trees bear all kinds of fashionable clothes, shoes, and hats. Yes,  there are also numerous bushes covered by precious jewelry. You can spend a whole day just trying to fit everything, and you'll never use even a fraction of astonishing possibilities. Schlauraffen Land is your perfect opportunity to shine as a fashion icon today and every day.

When your basic needs are so well satisfied, you need a bit of culture as well. The Land of Milk and Honey is also a place where parties never stop. Merry music and lively dances will occupy every spare moment of yours if you are interested. Folk of both genders and all ages can participate. It seems the birds enjoy it, too!

Everybody can be a king if he wants - that's the simple rule of Schlauraffen Land. You are not determined by your birth, age, or looks. You can always have your throne with a bunch of servants willing to fulfill your wishes. Of course, you don't have any royalty-related obligations or any other kind of worries.

Your status in Cokaigne is defined by pure joy and happiness.

There is no work in the Land of Milk and Honey because there is no need for it. Everything everybody needs is already available in large quantities so everybody can enjoy it.

Your favorite food, for instance, can be in so large quantities you just have to bite it and load your stomach with it. Or you can take your time and enjoy it with a spoon. Or just dig into it.

It's your choice. It's Schlauraffen Land!
